Everett W. Wess is a dedicated member of the Avondale Church of Christ in Birmingham, Alabama, a lifelong public servant, civil rights advocate, and experienced attorney running for the United States Senate. His mission is to fight for justice, opportunity, and dignity for all Alabamians. Based in Birmingham, Everett has spent decades standing up for working families, protecting your rights, and ensuring fairness in Alabama’s courts and communities.
Everett earned his Juris Doctor from the Birmingham School of Law and holds a Master of Business Administration from Alabama A&M University. He also earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics from Alabama A&M and an Associate of Arts in Music Education from Selma University. His education reflects a deep belief in the power of learning, Alabama institutions, and public education as engines of opportunity.
Since 2001, Everett has served as Managing Partner of The Wess Law Firm, P.C., where he has devoted his legal career primarily to estate planning and criminal defense. He has represented individuals charged with misdemeanors, felonies, and capital offenses, often advocating for those who lacked resources or a voice in the system. For ten years, he served on the Federal Criminal Justice Act panel, representing indigent defendants in federal court and working to ensure equal justice under the law. He has written appellate briefs in both state and federal courts and handled cases throughout Alabama.
Everett has served Alabama’s judicial system from multiple perspectives. For eight years, he has served as a Midfield Municipal Court Judge in Jefferson County, Alabama. Earlier in his career, he served as a Prosecutor for the City of Midfield and as a Public Defender for the City of Irondale, giving him firsthand experience with the full spectrum of the justice system and reinforcing his belief that accountability and fairness must go hand in hand.
Before practicing law, Everett worked for more than a decade in Huntsville, Alabama, in technology, engineering, and education. His professional experience includes supporting NASA mission operations, military and national security systems, telecommunications infrastructure, and large-scale financial processing platforms. He also served as an adjunct instructor for Faulkner University in Huntsville and Birmingham, helping students gain practical technology and business skills. This background gives him a strong understanding of workforce development, innovation, and the importance of investing in American talent.
Everett is admitted to practice in all Alabama state courts, all federal district courts in Alabama, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He has held leadership roles throughout Alabama’s legal community, including President of the Birmingham Bar Association’s Criminal Justice Section, President of the Greater Birmingham Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and Chair of the Birmingham Bar Association’s Law Day Program. He currently serves as State President of Alabama New South Coalition, Inc., working to advance civic engagement, equity, and progress.
